Monaco, 15 December 2010 – During the 4th Peace and Sport International Forum held in Monaco from 1st to 3rd December, Mr. Amir DOSSAL was appointed Ambassador for Peace and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport ».

 

To symbolize his commitment, he was presented with an emblem of a small Golden Dove by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, Patron of the organization, and by Joël Bouzou, its President and Founder.

 

Amir Dossal is Founder of the Global Partnerships Forum, a new global initiative to address economic & social challenges through innovative partnerships; He is also Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union for Global Partnerships and co-initiator of the Pearl Initiative, which promotes transparency and accountability in the Gulf Region.

Monaco, 3 December, 2010 – During the closing ceremony of the 4th Peace and Sport International Forum which ended today in Monaco, another 14 Olympic and non-Olympic international sports federations, plus the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced that they are joining the Peace and Sport platform to deploy educational programs through sport across the globe.

 

The Federations are:

The creation of this innovative programwas announced yesrerdayduring the 4thPeace and SportInternational Forum in Monaco, placed under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, in front of 500 high-profile delegates from sport, politics and private sector.

 

“Peace Through Sport Engineers”– a profession for the future


Starting in 2011, the MSPS, a 10-month multidisciplinary program,will seek to producea well-trained elite group of “Engineers for Peace through Sport.” Participants will learn how toharness the potential of sport as a strategic tool for building and promoting a peace that lasts across the globe, specifically in post-conflict areas and regions affected by extreme poverty or lack of social cohesion.

This happy fact was demonstrated during the Peace and Sport Awards Ceremony 2010, which this evening rewarded people and initiatives in sport having made a key contribution to social stability in the world during the previous year.

 

In front of 500 distinguished figures from politics, sport, the private sector and civil society who were united for the 4th Peace and Sport International Forum, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of the organization, paid tribute to six achievements that incarnate what sport can do to promote dialogue and build bridges between divided communities.

flech Peace and Sport's giant step towards international expansion


Monaco, 2 December, 2010 - "Peace and Sport, l’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport” under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, is entering into a phase of international expansion by opening its first two subsidiary offices in the United States and in China.

 

"Peace and Sport USA" will be based in New York and "Peace and Sport China" will be based in Beijing. These offices will bring proximity to decision-makers in sport, politics, the private sector and civil society with whom Peace and Sport works on a daily basis. The organization needs this close cooperation to deploy its activities for peace-building and peace-promotion through sport in areas of post-conflict, extreme poverty or lack of social cohesion.

 

The two new entities will operate as regional strategic bases. Peace and Sport USA will broaden action across the American continent (North and South America) and Peace and Sport China will drive operations throughout Asia.

 

Only four years after the organization was founded, this dual international expansion represents a momentous evolution for Peace and Sport, whose headquarters is located in the Principality of Monaco. It will enable the promotion of sport as an instrument for peace and social stability in new territories and facilitate the use of sport to reconcile divided communities by attracting new actors for peace and sport.

Monaco, 1 December 2010 - Four stars of the podium today joined the "Champions for Peace” club, a group of famous athletes committed to serve the world peace through sport. Created in 2009 “Champions for Peace” is an initiative from the international organization Peace and Sport.

 

The new Champions are:

• Double world champion and triple Olympic champion Marie-Jose PEREC (France)

• Living rugby legend JONAH LOMU (New Zealand)

• Seven-time car rally world champion SEBASTIEN LOEB (France)

• Double Olympic champion and four-time world champion in middle-distance running, HICHAM EL GUERROUJ (Morocco).

Monaco, 2 December, 2010 - Olympic and non-Olympic International Sports Federations (IFs) will now have more resources and tools to effectively contribute to the advancement of peace in the world through sport.

 

This was announced today by "Peace and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport’ and SportAccord, the umbrella organisation representing IFs, after signing a strategic alliance on the occasion of the 4th Peace and Sport International Forum which runs from 1- 3 December in Monaco.

 

This alliance aims to facilitate interaction between Peace and Sport’s Programmes and Field Operations Department and SportAccord’s newly-created Sports’ Social Responsibility Department.

 

In this context, SportAccord’s member IFs will now have access to a wide range of services, information and expertise that will enable them to become more involved in programmes for peacebuilding and peace-promotion across all five continents.

Over 500 decision-makers from 90 countries unite to put sport at the service of peace

 

Monaco - 25 November 2010. An influential community of decision-makers from sport, politics and the private sector will gather together next week in the Principality of Monaco for the 4th Peace and Sport International Forum to put sport at the service of sustainable peace in the world. Under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, in a neutral and apolitical environment, this unique summit will bring together more than 500 experts and leading figures from 90 countries in order to achieve a major goal: fortify the role of sport in international and local policies for peace-building, peace-keeping and peace-promotion in countries in crisis.

flech Sport Builds Bridges Between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo

On 16 October the very first "Friendship Games" will take place in the Great Lakes region of Africa, a day of trans-border sports competitions to promote peace and unite young people from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) around the values of friendship and fraternity offered by sport.

 

128 young people from 9-15 years old from communities located on both sides of the border will participate in this first edition of the Games to be held in Rugombo in the Burundian province of Cibitoke, bordering the DRC.

flech Peace and Sport and the Union of Modern Pentathlon step up their action in the Great Lakes Region in Africa

To mark the official opening of the Congolese Federation of Modern Pentathlon, a Biathle Championship for Peace will be held on October 17 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Backed by Peace and Sport, a neutral international organization, the event heralds the beginning of a long-term commitment to peace in the country.

The Biathle Championship, which will take place in Uvira in South Kivu, aims to promote peace and help calm ethnic tensions in this province of the DRC which was hit hard by the war.

 

Despite the official end to fighting in 2002, the population of South Kivu, particularly young people, continue to suffer violence from armed gangs. This region is one of the most disadvantaged in the country, with a poverty rate of 84.7%.

 

The Championship on 17 October will bring together nearly 200 young athletes, all keen to turn the page of war and live in peace. The event is intended to reconcile divided communities, encourage dialogue, foster social stability and create the necessary conditions for sustainable peace. Peace and Sport’s patronage of the event ensures that it will be completely neutral and non-biased.

flech Winners of the Peace and Sport Image of the Year, an Indian and a Pakistani Unite for Peace

Monaco, 12 October 2010 – During the 21st Georges Bertellotti Golden Podium Awards Monaco 2010, Peace and Sport L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport unveiled the winner of this year’s prestigious Peace and Sport Image of the Year Award in an ‘avant-première’ announcement.

 

For three years, this distinction presented in partnership with SPORTELMonaco and Getty Images, has rewarded the best image of fraternity through sport or a symbolic moment showing the ability of sport to advance peace in the world and to encourage reconciliation among peoples.

 

The Peace and Sport Image of the Year Award will be given to the Indian Rohan BOPANNA and Pakistani-UL-HAQ AISAM QURESHI, two tennis players who managed to bring the political authorities in their respective countries closer, through their own history of personal friendship and commitment.

flech Badminton makes a commitment to encourage peace and social cohesion in Colombia and East Timor alongside Peace and Sport


Paris, 28 August, 2010 – At the Yonex Badminton World Championships 2010, currently taking place in Paris, Peace and Sport and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) signed a global partnership agreement to develop joint programs for peace-promotion.

This association will increase the operational capacities of Peace and Sport, an international initiative placed under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, which works to reconcile divided communities by establishing communication and dialogue through sport. It will provide material support, technical resources and expertise from the BWF to lead programs for peace education for thousands of young people in need throughout the world.

flech Haiti children meet with Champion for Peace Christian Karembeu


The French football champion and ‘Champion for Peace’ Christian Karembeu is currently on an official trip to Haiti with Peace and Sport. He is conducting football training sessions with children in survivor camps and participating in a program run by the Haitian Olympic Committee (HOC) to bring them psychosocial support.

5 tons of sports equipment have been collected and sent to Haiti by Peace and Sport as part of its ‘Sport Solidarity for Haiti’ operation.

Consequently, 35,000 youngsters are able to benefit from the HOC program, which gives them access to a variety of different sports activities every week (football, volleyball, basketball, judo, chess etc.). Nearly 200 sports instructors have been recruited as part of this initiative.

flech HERCULIS 2010: 140 athletes proclaim their support for Haiti alongside Peace and Sport


Monaco, July 22, 2010 - The world elite of athletics gathered in Monaco for Herculis 2010 (a Samsung Diamond League meeting) overwhelmingly brought their support to the “Sport Solidarity for Haiti" operation coordinated by Peace and Sport to help young Haitian survivors of the devastating earthquake of 12 January.

"Sport Solidarity for Haiti” was launched 4 months ago with the objective of collecting sports equipment and funds to donate to the Haitian Olympic Committee (HOC).In partnership with Peace and Sport under the sponsorship of UNICEF, the HOC uses the equipment to provide sports activities for children and adolescents from 3-18 years living in Survivor Camps in Port-au-Prince and Léogâne. Using sport, this program helps young people to rediscover landmarks in life and evacuate the trauma of the earthquake, thus giving them a structured living environment. 30,000 young people are already benefiting from the program each week.

– Leading Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna was today named a "Champion for Peace". He joins a group of 47 major international athletes committed to serving peace through sport in the world.

Created at the initiative of "Peace and Sport", a neutral international organization under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the "Champions for Peace" club includes elite athletes representing 27 different nationalities. They embody 26 Olympic and non-Olympic sports disciplines, boasting a total of 49 World Champions, 20 Olympic Champions and more than a hundred national and regional titles!

flech World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk inaugurates "Ajedrez por la Paz” in Colombia


World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk recently visited Colombia to show the joys of chess to hundreds of underprivileged children in Puerto Tejada, near Cali.

The "Chess Queen" officially opened the program "Ajedrez por la Paz" (Chess for Peace) launched by "Peace and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport” in partnership with a local NGO called Colombianitos and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Paris, 7 May 2010 - "Peace and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix Par le Sport" placed under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, and KUBE, manufacturer of luxury designer sports balls, will unite around a common cause to help Haiti at the World Charity Soccer 2010 event which will be held on 19 May at Paris’ Charlety stadium.

On top of the match played by celebrities and professional footballers, Peace and Sport and KUBE will have a joint stand in the Haitian village, where spectators and visitors can purchase the designer’s limited-edition footballs. The flagship model will be the “African Colors Project” ball specially designed for KUBE by the African stylist MALI SOULE for the Football World Cup 2010.

For each ball purchased, one will be donated to the Haitian Olympic Committee (HOC).

SPORT AS A TOOL FOR RECONSTRUCTION IN HAITI
100,000 children and adolescents from 8 to 20 years now live in survivor camps in Haiti, left to their own resources and disoriented after the tragedy that hit the island on 12 January. Sport is one of the main ways of helping these youngsters to overcome their trauma, to resume living together in confidence and to rebuild the country on sustainable, peaceful and fair foundations.

- During an official trip to Costa Rica, Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of Peace and Sport was awarded a Diploma Honoris Causa in Humanities from the University for Peace (UPEACE).

This title was presented by John J. Maresca, Rector of UPEACE in recognition "of his unique worldwide leadership
role in promoting peace and mutual understanding among different cultures, and his leadership of organizations devoted to these objectives.
" The ceremony took place before an audience of around one hundred officials, company directors, athletes, students, researchers and stakeholder in Costa Rican civil society.

flech The Chairman of Korean Air Becomes an Ambassador for Peace and Sport

Monaco, 26 February 2010 - Mr. Yang-Ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air, is now an international Ambassador for "Peace and Sport, l’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport."
This appointment makes Mr. Cho the 10th official Ambassador for the Monaco-based organization, and the first from the Asian continent.

During a reception at the Olympians Reunion Center at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010 last week, he was presented with an emblem of a Golden Dove to symbolize his commitment, from the hands of H.S.H. Prince

Albert II of Monaco, Patron of Peace and Sport, and Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of Peace and Sport. President and CEO of Korean Air since 1992, and Chairman and CEO since 1999, Mr. Cho is a well-known figure in global air transport. He has also been Chairman of the Hanjin Group since 2003, one of the largest conglomerates in international transport.

A true sports enthusiast, for two years Mr. Cho has been President of the Korea Table Tennis Association. In November 2009, he was also appointed East Asia Regional Vice President of the Asia Table Tennis Union. In July
2009, he became a member of the Korean Olympic Committee.
