Collaboration with universities and research institutes

Peace and Sport’s collaboration with universities and research institutes has three main focuses:

The International University of Monaco (IUM - part of the French INSEEC Group) and the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (UPeace) in Costa Rica join forces under the guidance and leadership of “Peace and Sport, l’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport” to develop an innovative Master’s degree in Sustainable Peace through Sport (MSPS).

Starting in 2011, the MSPS, a 10-month multidisciplinary program, seeks to produce a well-trained group of “Engineers for Peace through Sport.” Participants learn how to harness the potential of sport as a strategic tool for building and promoting a peace that lasts across the globe, specifically in post-conflict areas and regions affected by extreme poverty or lack of social cohesion.

Designed for young graduates and executives, the joint Peace and Sport / IUM and UPeace Master’s degree combines solid academic knowledge about business, the sport industry and the peace-building process with practical skills. The coursework empowers students to:

  • develop operational competencies in peace-building through sport;
  • understand diplomacy through sport;
  • activate international organizations, NGOs, civil society and local players create cooperation between stakeholders and promote strategic partnerships;
  • advise decision-makers and political leaders on how to create sports policies for sustainable peace;
  • design, implement, develop and monitor sports programs;
  • raise funds to finance initiatives.

Researchers from partner institutions give Peace and Sport critical expertise in monitoring and evaluating field projects.

These measurement tools, both qualitative and quantitative, are essential for designing a project, as well as implementing, improving and making it sustainable.

Through its research partners, Peace and Sport is able to bring real expertise to stakeholders in the field who are keen to learn about best practices, especially:
  • Introducing the practice of sports which are suited to the local environment
  • Understanding the political environment,
  • Training educators and transferring skills,
  • Fundraising methods and ways to become self-financing
  • Methods to make programs sustainable
