The 3rd Peace and Sport International Forum took place in Monaco from 25 – 27 November 2009.


It brought together 440 participants:

  • 85 nations represented
  • 2 Heads of State
  • 40 Governments
  • 32 National Olympic Committees
  • 30 International Sports Federations
  • 42 Non-Governmental Organizations
  • 37 international athletes
  • 10 members of the International Olympic Committee

In total, the 2009 Forum represented 20 hours of debate:

  • 8 issues discussed
  • 52 speakers
  • 70 testimonies and reactions
  • 11 short documentaries
  • 30 concrete proposals


Highlights of Forum 2009 :

  • The launch of “Champions for Peace” – 40 famous athletes committed to serving peace in the world through sport
  • The Official Partnership between Peace and Sport, the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP)
  • The 2nd Peace and Sport Awards Ceremony, which rewarded the International Table Tennis Federation (Federation of the Year), the Laikipia Highlands Games (Event for Peace of the Year), Skateistan and Play Soccer (NGOs of the Year) Barclays (CSR Initiative of the Year) and the IAAF (Image of the Year)
  • A Partnership Agreement with the University for Peace in Costa Rica to train future "Engineers for peace through sport"
  • Sotchi, Russian Olympic city selected to host 2012 International Peace and Sport Forum
